Disclosed are apparatus and method to treat large amounts of flue gas from a pulverized coal combustion power plant. The flue gas is contacted with solid sorbents to selectively absorb CO2, which is then released as a nearly pure CO2 gas stream upon regeneration at higher temperature. The method is capable of handling the necessary sorbent circulation rates of tens of millions of lbs/hr to separate CO2 from a power plant's flue gas stream. Because pressurizing large amounts of flue gas is cost prohibitive, the method of this invention minimizes the overall pressure drop in the absorption section to less than 25 inches of water column. The internal circulation of sorbent within the absorber assembly in the proposed method not only minimizes temperature increases in the absorber to less than 25 °F, but also increases the CO2 concentration in the sorbent to near saturation levels. Saturating the sorbent with CO2 in the absorber section minimizes the heat energy needed for sorbent regeneration. The commercial embodiments of the proposed method can be optimized for sorbents with slower or faster absorption kinetics, low or high heat release rates, low or high saturation capacities and slower or faster regeneration kinetics.

L'invention concerne un appareil et un procédé pour traiter de larges quantités de gaz d'échappement provenant d'une centrale électrique à combustion de charbon pulvérisé. Le gaz d'échappement est mis en contact avec des sorbants solides pour absorber sélectivement le CO2 qui est ensuite libéré sous forme d'un courant gazeux de CO2 presque pur lors de la régénération à température plus élevée. Le procédé permet de manipuler les taux de circulation du sorbant nécessaires de dizaines de millions de livres/heure pour séparer le CO2 du courant de gaz d'échappement de la centrale électrique. Parce que les coûts de pressurisation de grandes quantités de gaz d'échappement sont prohibitifs, le procédé selon la présente invention minimise la dépression totale dans la section d'absorption à moins de 25 pouces de colonne d'eau. La circulation interne du sorbant dans l'ensemble absorbeur dans le procédé proposé non seulement minimise les augmentations de température dans l'absorbeur à moins de 25 °F, mais encore augmente la concentration de CO2 dans le sorbant à des niveaux proches de la saturation. La saturation du sorbant avec du CO2 dans la section d'absorbeur minimise l'énergie calorifique nécessaire à la régénération du sorbant. Les modes de réalisation commerciaux du procédé proposé peuvent être optimisés pour des sorbants à cinétiques d'absorption plus lentes ou plus rapides, taux de libération de chaleur bas ou élevés, capacités de saturation basses ou élevées et cinétiques de régénération plus lentes ou plus rapides.
