A process for treating an aqueous stream from a polymerization process comprising the steps of: a) subjecting a stream containing polymer and water from a polymerization reactor to solid liquid separation to recover a polymer product and an aqueous stream containing suspended solids and dissolved solids; b) treating the aqueous stream to reduce suspended solids content; and c) treating the aqueous stream to remove dissolved solids and remaining suspended solids content following reduction of the suspended solids content in preceding treatment step (b). The polymerisation process may be a suspension polymerisation process for producing polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and the aqueous stream may be a centrate from a centrifugation step for recovering PVC. The treated aqueous stream following step (c) may be recycled to the polymerisation process.

L'invention porte sur un procédé de traitement d'un courant aqueux, provenant d'un processus de polymérisation, qui consiste : a) à soumettre un courant contenant un polymère et de l'eau, provenant d'un réacteur de polymérisation, à une séparation solide-liquide afin de récupérer un produit polymère et un courant aqueux contenant des solides en suspension et des solides dissous ; b) à traiter le courant aqueux pour réduire le contenu de solides en suspension, et c) à traiter le courant aqueux pour éliminer les solides dissous et le contenu de solides en suspension restant après la réduction du contenu de solides en suspension dans l'étape de traitement (b) précédente. Le processus de polymérisation peut être un processus de polymérisation en suspension pour obtenir du poly(chlorure de vinyle) (PVC), et le courant aqueux peut être un surnageant provenant d'une étape de centrifugation pour récupérer le poly(chlorure de vinyle). Le courant aqueux traité après l'étape (c) peut être recyclé dans le processus de polymérisation.
