Provided is a cubic boron nitride sintered compact, which is a delicate sintered compact obtained by reactive sintering and with which, because of the bonding phase that is selected and the preparation of the particles thereof, damage resistance and toughness are successfully improved without compromising abrasion resistance. Also provided is a method for producing the same. The cubic boron nitride sintered compact is formed from a bonding phase containing titanium nitride and titanium carbonitride; cubic boron nitride; and inevitable impurities, and the interval between the Bragg angle 2θ of the diffraction line at the (200) face of titanium carbonitride and the Bragg angle 2θ of the diffraction line at the (200) face of titanium nitride is between 0.30 and 0.60°, and the half width of the diffraction line at the (200) face of the titanium carbonitride is between 0.30 and 0.50°, as determined by X-ray diffraction using Cu-Kα lines.
