Abstract

A position sensor that can be used in high-pressure drilling environments, such as in measurement while drilling applications, is disclosed. It comprises a first member having at least one easily-magnetizable pin fixedly coupled thereto and a second member having one or more coils fixedly coupled thereto. The coils incorporate slots through which the pins can travel when the members rotate relative to each other. Circuitry detects a change in inductance in the coils when pins enter or leave the slots. Consequently, the position of the first member relative to the second can be determined. The position sensor comprises two main sections - a pin/coil arrangement that can withstand high pressure and experiences no wear, and conventional electronic circuitry that is protected from pressure behind a bulkhead.

La présente invention concerne un capteur de position qui peut être utilisé dans des environnements de forage haute pression, notamment dans des applications de mesure de fond en cours de forage. Ledit capteur comprend un premier élément auquel est couplée solidement au moins une broche facilement magnétisable, et un second élément auquel sont couplées solidement une ou plusieurs bobines. Les bobines comportent des fentes à travers lesquelles les broches peuvent se déplacer lorsque les éléments tournent les uns par rapport aux autres. Un montage de circuits détecte un changement de l’inductance dans les bobines lorsque les broches entrent dans les fentes ou en sortent. En conséquence, la position du premier élément par rapport au second peut être déterminée. Le capteur de position comprend deux parties principales : un agencement broche/bobine qui peut supporter une pression élevée et ne subit pas d’usure, et un montage de circuits électroniques classique qui est protégé de la pression derrière une cloison.
