A rotary piston internal combustion engine of the Wankel type has a housing (1) with a two lobed epitrochoidal inner peripheral surface (14) a shaft (8) journalled in end casings (3, 4), a rotor (9) eccentrically mounted on the shaft (8) and geared to rotate at one third speed of the shaft (8) whereby working chambers (34, 35, 36) are formed between flanks of the rotor (9) and the end casings (3, 4), which chambers vary in volume as the rotor (9) rotates, the rotor (9) being cooled by a cooling medium in a generally closed cooling circuit, the medium being circulated by a circulating pump (27), via connecting passageways (20, 18) in the end casings (3, 4) and an internal passageway (21) of the rotor (9), and through an external cooling heat exchanger (24), the cooling medium being blow-by gasses from the high pressure working chambers, which gasses have leaked past the rotor side seals (26) into the rotor cooling passages.

La présente invention se rapporte à un moteur à combustion interne à piston rotatif du type Wankel comportant un carter (1) présentant une surface périphérique intérieure épitrochoïde à deux lobes (14), un arbre (8) tourillonné dans des boîtiers d’extrémité (3, 4), un rotor (9) monté excentré sur l’arbre (8) et engrené pour tourner à un tiers de la vitesse de l’arbre (8), des chambres de travail (34, 35, 36) étant ainsi formées entre les flancs du rotor (9) et les boîtiers d’extrémité (3, 4), le volume desdites chambres variant lorsque le rotor (9) tourne, le rotor (9) étant refroidi par un agent de refroidissement dans un circuit de refroidissement globalement fermé, l’agent circulant sous l’action d’une pompe de circulation (27), par l’intermédiaire de passages de liaison (20, 18) dans les boîtiers d’extrémité (3, 4) et d’un passage interne (21) du rotor (9), et à travers un échangeur thermique de refroidissement extérieur (24), l’agent de refroidissement correspondant à des gaz de soufflage provenant des chambres de travail à pression élevée, lesquels gaz ayant fui après les joints latéraux (26) du rotor dans les passages de refroidissement du rotor.
