Abstract

A super-twist nematic (STN) liquid crystal (LC) light shutter with improved contrast performance, lower power requirements and enhanced off-axis performance. Compensator components may be disposed in front of and, in some cases, behind the liquid crystal cell. In some embodiments, a STN LC cell with a twist angle of 270 degrees may be used. In other embodiments, a STN LC cell with a twist angle ranging between just greater than 270 degrees and 285 degrees may be used. Also disclosed is a system incorporating the various disclosed STN LC shutters.

L'invention concerne un obturateur de lumière à cristaux liquides (LC) à nématique en superhélice (STN) ayant une performance de contraste améliorée, des exigences de faible puissance et une performance axiale améliorée. Des composants de compensateur peuvent être disposés devant et, dans certains cas, derrière la cellule à cristaux liquides. Dans certains modes de réalisation, une cellule LC STN ayant un angle de torsion de 270 degrés peut être utilisée. Dans d'autres modes de réalisation, une cellule LC STN LC ayant un angle de torsion entre juste un peu plus de 270 degrés et 285 degrés peut être utilisée.
