Abstract

A transmission system for a vehicle that has multiple sets of driven wheels (18,24) is disclosed. The transmission system typically drives a first set (24) and a second set (18) of wheels. The transmission includes a disconnect unit (20) being operative, on application of a brake to the first set of wheels (24), to disconnect drive to the first set of wheels, while maintaining drive to the second set of wheels (18). The brake is typically a handbrake operative on the rear wheels. A disconnect unit is disclosed that can be operated by hydraulic pressure generated by manual operation of a handbrake lever, so avoiding the need to provide pump-generated hydraulic power. In a typical embodiment, the disconnect unit is disposed between a centre differential (14) and a rear differential (22). When the disconnect unit disconnects drive to the rear differential, the centre differential is preferably locked.

L'invention concerne un système de transmission pour véhicule à multiples ensembles de roues entraînées (18, 24). Le système de transmission entraîne généralement un premier ensemble (24) et un second ensemble (18) de roues. La transmission comporte une unité de désaccouplage (20) servant, lors du freinage du premier ensemble de roues (24), à désaccoupler l'entraînement du premier ensemble de roues, conjointement à l'entraînement du second ensemble de roues (18). Généralement, le frein est un frein à main agissant sur les roues arrière. Cette invention concerne aussi une unité de désaccouplage qui peut être actionnée par une pression hydraulique générée par l'actionnement manuel d'un levier de frein à main, ce qui évite d'avoir recours à une puissance hydraulique générée par une pompe. Dans un mode de réalisation habituel, l'unité de désaccouplage est disposée entre un différentiel central (14) et un différentiel arrière (22). Lorsque l'unité de désaccouplage désaccouple l'entraînement du différentiel arrière, le différentiel central est, de préférence, verrouillé.
