Abstract

A touch sensing catheter having a strain sensor assembly that may resolve the magnitude and direction of a force exerted on a distal extremity of the catheter, the strain sensor assembly being substantially insensitive to bulk temperature changes. A deformable structure having a plurality of optical fibers associated therewith that are strained by the imposition of a contact force transferred thereto. The optical fibers cooperate with the deformable structure to effect variable gap interferometers, such as Fabry-Perot resonators, that vary in operative length when a force is exerted on the deformable structure. The strain sensor assembly is rendered insensitive to bulk temperature changes by matching the coefficient of thermal expansion of the deformable body with that of the optical fibers. The strain sensor assembly may also be configured to mitigate the effects of thermal gradients using various thermal isolation techniques.

Cathéter à activation par pression ayant un capteur de déformation pouvant résoudre la magnitude et la direction d'une force exercée sur une extrémité distale du cathéter, le capteur de déformation étant sensiblement insensible aux changements de température totale. Structure déformable ayant une pluralité de fibres optiques associées à celle-ci et qui sont déformées par l'imposition d'une force de contact transférée à celles-ci. Les fibres optiques coopèrent avec la structure déformable afin d'actionner des interféromètres à intervalle variable, tels que des résonateurs de Fabry-Perot, qui changent de longueur lorsqu'une est exercée sur la structure déformable. Le capteur de déformation est rendu insensible aux changements de température totale en adaptant le coefficient de dilatation thermique du corps déformable à celui des fibres optiques. Le capteur de déformation peut également être configuré afin d'atténuer les effets des gradients thermiques en utilisant différentes techniques d'isolation thermique.
