Abstract

A drag bit (10) having cutting elements (18), wherein the cross section of the cutting elements (18) is an oval shape, wherein in one embodiment the major axis is perpendicular to the surface of the drag bit blade (14). A method is also included, wherein the method comprises using a milling bit (32) having an oval cross section that thereby produces pockets (30) in the drag bit blades (28) for receiving the oval shaped cutting elements. Use of the oval bit also results in a half oval formed at the closed end of the pocket.

Cette invention concerne un trépan comprenant des éléments de coupe. La coupe transversale desdits éléments de coupe est de forme ovale. Dans un premier mode de réalisation, l'axe majeur est perpendiculaire à la surface de la lame du trépan. L'invention concerne aussi un procédé comprenant l'étape consistant à utiliser un outil de fraisage ayant une coupe transversale ovale formant ainsi des poches dans les lames du trépan pour recevoir les éléments de coupe de forme ovale. L'utilisation de l'outil de forme ovale entraîne aussi la formation d'un demi-ovoïde à l'extrémité fermée de la poche.
