Various embodiments disclosed herein comprise a display device comprising a plurality of spatial light modulators and an illumination apparatus. The illumination apparatus comprising a light bar (100) that guides light along a length thereof and turning microstructure disposed on top or bottom of the light bar. The turning microstructure directs the light out a side of the light bar. The illumination apparatus further comprises a light guide panel (88) disposed with respect to the side of the light bar such that the light from the light bar is coupled to the light guide panel. The light guide panel is configured to direct the light coupled therein out of the light guide panel. The plurality of light modulators (81a) disposed with respect to the light guide panel to receive the light directed out of the light guide panel.

Divers modes de réalisation décrits ici concernent un dispositif d'affichage comportant une pluralité de modulateurs spatiaux de lumière et un appareil d'éclairage. L'appareil d'éclairage comporte une barre lumineuse le long de laquelle la lumière est guidée, ainsi qu'une microstructure tournante disposée sur le dessus ou sur le dessous de ladite barre lumineuse. La microstructure tournante dirige la lumière vers l'extérieur de la barre lumineuse. L'appareil d'éclairage comporte en outre un panneau de guidage de lumière disposé relativement au côté de la barre lumineuse de telle sorte que la lumière provenant de la barre lumineuse est couplée au panneau de guidage de lumière. Le panneau de guidage de lumière est conçu pour diriger la lumière avec laquelle ledit panneau est couplé vers l'extérieur du panneau de guidage de lumière. La pluralité de modulateurs de lumière est disposée relativement au panneau de guidage de lumière pour recevoir la lumière dirigée vers l'extérieur du panneau de guidage de lumière.
