A liquid cartridge (110) has arranged in it a detection target member (115) and a float member (116) fixed to the detection target member (115). When liquid in the liquid cartridge (110) decreases and comes near the float member (116), the float member (116) moves in the direction Q1. In operative association with this, the detection target member (115) moves, and a light shutoff section (162a), a slit (161), and a light shutoff section (162b) that are formed at the detection target member (115) are sequentially positioned at a detection position (142).
