A method of testing an elongate wooden element comprises injecting an input acoustic signal into the element, detecting a return acoustic signal at a surface of the element, and determining a spectral profile for the return signal. In at least a predetermined range in the spectral profile, each resonance peak is detected whose amplitude exceeds a first predetermined value, and from the resonance peaks so detected the number of higher peaks is determined whose amplitude exceeds 3 dB. For each of said higher peaks a quality factor Q is calculated, a mean quality value Qm is determined, and Qm is then compared with a predetermined value to provide an indication of the presence or absence of external decay of the element. A ratio R of the number of higher peaks to the number of resonance peaks detected, and the statistical spread S of the aver- age Q for the spectral profile, are calculated and compared with a predetermined boundary function Fn(R,S) to determine acceptability or unacceptability of the pole.

La présente invention concerne un procédé de contrôle d'un élément en bois de forme allongée comprenant l'injection d'un signal acoustique d'entrée dans l'élément, la détection d'un signal acoustique de retour à une surface de l'élément, et la détermination d'un profil du spectre pour le signal de retour. Dans au moins une portée prédéterminée dans le spectre de profil, chaque pic de résonance est détecté dont l'amplitude dépasse une première valeur prédéterminée, et à partir des pics de résonance ainsi détectés le nombre de pics supérieur est déterminé dont l'amplitude dépasse 3dB. Pour chacun des pics supérieurs, un facteur de qualité Q est calculé, une valeur de qualité moyenne Qm est déterminée, et Qm est ensuite comparée avec une valeur prédéterminée pour fournir une indication de la présence ou de l'absence d'une détérioration externe de l'élément. Un rapport R du nombre de pics supérieurs au nombre de pics de résonance détectés, et l'écart statistique S du facteur de qualité moyen pour le profil spectral, sont calculés et comparés avec une fonction frontière prédéterminée Fn(R,S) pour déterminer l'acceptabilité ou la non acceptabilité du poteau.
