Claims

1. Method in a telemetry system for establishing communication between an implantable medical device (3) and a base station (4) of said telemetry system, characterised by the steps of:

- starting, in said base station (4), a first timer (B-T2),

- determining, in said base station (4), channels (Chi, Ch2,..., CIIN) that are free for communication among a number of available channels, and selecting one (Chx) of said free channels,

- starting, in said base station (4), a second timer (B-T3),

- transmitting, as long as said first or second timer (B-T2, B-T3) has not expired, a recognition message on the selected channel (Chx) to the implantable medical device (3), and

- establishing, upon receipt of a recognition reply message from said implantable medical device (3), communication between said base station (4) and said implantable medical device (3) on said selected channel (Chx).

2. The method as claimed in claim 1, further comprising the step of repeating, if said second timer (B-T3) has expired while said first timer (B-T2) has not expired and if no recognition reply message is received from said implantable medical device (3), said steps of: determining and selecting a free channel (Chx), starting the second timer (B-T3) and transmitting a recognition message to the implantable medical device (3).

3. The method as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the step of determining and selecting a free channel comprises the sub-steps of:

- measuring received signal strengths of said free channels and

- selecting the channel having the lowest signal strength.

4. The method as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein said implantable medical device (3) is a dedicated implantable medical device.

5. The method as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein said first timer (B-T2) is set to a time interval within the range of 5 - 60 seconds.

6. The method as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein said second timer (BT3) is set to a time interval within the range of 1 - 5 seconds.

7. The method as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein said method is initiated upon the occurrence of an activating mechanism.

8. The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein said activating mechanism is a timer (B-Ti) indicating a time of day.

9. The method as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein said method is halted if said second tinier (B-T3) expires.

10. The method as claimed in claim 9, wherein said base station (3) is arranged to repeat said steps after a specified period of time.

11. Method in a telemetry system for allocating a channel for use in communication between an implantable medical device (3) and a base station (4) of said telemetry system, characterised by performing, in said implantable medical device (3), the steps of:

- starting a first timer (1-T2),

- listening for signals transmitted from said base station (4) and determining, among a number of channels, channels (Ch0, Chi,..., CIIN-I) that are free for communication,

- setting a channel number to Ch = First - 1, wherein First is the lowest channel number of said free channels (Ch0, Ch),..., ChN-]),

- starting a second timer (1-T3),

- selecting channel Ch = Ch + 1 among the available N channels, wherein if Ch > First+N, then setting Ch = First ,

- listening on said selected channel as long as said first or second tinier (1-T2, 1-T3) has not expired and as long as no recognition message has been received, and - repeating, as long as said first timer (1-T2) has not expired and no recognition message is received from said base station (4) and said second timer (1-T3) has expired, said steps of: starting the second timer (1-T3), selecting the channel Ch = Ch + 1 among the available N channels and listening on said selected channel,

- transmitting, upon receipt of a recognition message from said base station (4), a recognition reply message to said base station (4).

12. The method as claimed in claim 11, wherein said implantable medical device (3) is a dedicated implantable medical device.

13. The method as claimed in claim 11 or 12, wherein said first timer (1-T2) is set to a time interval within the range of 10-60 seconds.

14. The method as claimed in any claims 11-13, wherein said second timer (1-T3) is set to a time interval within the range of 10-100 ms.

15. The method as claimed in any of claims 1 1-14, wherein said method is halted if said second timer (1-T3) expires.

16. The method as claimed in claim 15, wherein said steps are repeated after a specified period of time.

17. The method as claimed in any of claims 1 1-16, wherein said method is initiated upon the occurrence of an activating mechanism.

18. The method as claimed in claim 17, wherein said activating mechanism is an external activating mechanism.

19. The method as claimed in claim 18, wherein said external activating mechanism is a magnet or inductive loop telemetry or other radio alert system.

20. A base station for a telemetry system comprising means for performing the method as claimed in any of claims 1-10.

21. An implantable medical device for a telemetry system comprising means for performing the method as claimed in any of claims 1 1-19.
