Disclosed is a birefringent film which has an optical indicatrix satisfying the following relationship: nz > nx =ny and which comprises at least one polycyclic compound having a -COOM group [wherein M represents a counter ion]. The polycyclic compound may be an acenaphtho[1,2-b]quinoxaline derivative represented by the general formula (I). The birefringent film shows a high refractive index in the thickness-wise direction and can be made into a thin film, because the polycyclic compound is contained in the film.

La présente invention concerne un film biréfringent dont l'indicatrice optique satisfait à la relation suivante : nz > nx = ny et qui comprend au moins un composé polycyclique ayant un groupe -COOM [dans lequel M représente un contre-ion]. Le composé polycyclique peut être un dérivé d'acénaphto[1,2-b]quinoxaline représenté par la formule générale (I). Le film biréfringent possède un indice de réfraction élevé dans le sens de l'épaisseur et il peut être mis sous forme de film mince dans la mesure où le composé polycyclique est contenu dans le film.

 本発明の複屈折フィルムは、屈折率楕円体がnz>nx=nyの関係を満足し、-COOM基(ここで、Mは対イオンを表す。)を含む、少なくとも1種の多環式化合物を含有しているものである。この多環式化合物は、例えば、一般式(I)で表されるアセナフト[1,2-b]キノキサリン誘導体が含まれる。  本発明の複屈折フィルムは、上記多環式化合物を含有することにより、厚み方向の屈折率が高く、且つ薄型に形成することができる。
