Processes and apparati for shaping sheet glass or thermoplastic materials use force from a layer of a flowing fluid, such as air, between the sheet and a mandrel at close to the softening temperature of the thermoplastic. The shape is preserved by colling. The shape of the air bearing mandrel and the pressure distribution of the fluid contribute to the final shape. A process can be conducted on one or two surfaces such that the force from the air layer is on one or two surfaces of the sheet. The gap size between the sheet and mandrel determines the pressure profile in the gap, which also determines the final sheet shape. In general, smaller gaps lead to larger viscous forces. The pressure profile depends on the shape of the mandrel, the size of the fluid gap and the sheet and the fluid supply pressure.

L'invention concerne des procédés et des appareils permettant de mettre en forme des matériaux vitreux ou thermoplastiques en feuille. Lesdits procédés et appareils exploitent la force issue d'une couche d'un fluide circulant, par exemple d'air, entre la feuille et un mandrin; le thermoplastique étant chauffé à une température proche de sa température de ramolissement. La forme est préservée par refroidissement. La forme du mandrin portant l'air et la répartition de pression du fluide pris en sandwich contribuent à l'obtention de la forme finale. Un procédé peut être mis en oeuvre sur une ou deux surfaces de sorte que la force issue de la couche d'air soit exercée sur une ou deux surfaces de la feuille. Un procédé mis en oeuvre sur deux faces améliore la planarité de la feuille s'il est appliqué pendant un procédé de fabrication en continu, de type procédé de fusion ou d'étirage par fente. La taille d'espacement entre la feuille et le mandrin détermine le profil de pression dans l'espacement, lequel détermine également la forme finale de la feuille. De manière générale, des espacements réduits entraînent la production de forces de viscosité plus importantes exercées par le fluide. Le profil de pression dépend de la forme du mandrin, de la taille de l'espacement du fluide entre le mandrin et la feuille et de la pression d'alimentation en fluide.
