A tissue protective system and method having particular application in thermoablative surgical therapies where heat or cold is used to create a kill zone for treating cancer cells as well as malignant or benign tumors in a targeted internal tissue area (e.g., the prostate 3) of a patient while sparing an adjacent benign internal tissue area (e.g., a neurovascular bundle 1). One of a hollow sheath (16) or a balloon (24) that is carried by a balloon catheter (20, 20-1) is located within an access opening that is made by a needle trocar (10) inserted between the targeted tissue area in need of treatment and the benign tissue area to be protected in order to hold the protected tissue area off the targeted tissue area and away from the lethal temperature of the kill zone. The balloon (24) of the balloon catheter (20, 20-1) is inflated in the access opening via a balloon channel (26) which runs longitudinally through the catheter. At least one temperature sensor (40, 42) is mounted on the balloon (24) and responsive to the temperature near the benign tissue area to be protected. Heat or cold is provided to the balloon (24) from a heating wire (34) or a circulating fluid, depending upon the temperature that is sensed by the temperature sensor (40, 42).

La présente invention concerne un système de protection de tissu et un procédé s'appliquant tout particulièrement dans le cadre de thermoablations chirurgicales, lors desquelles la chaleur ou le froid est utilisé pour créer une zone létale destinée à traiter les cellules cancéreuses ainsi que les tumeurs malignes ou bénignes dans une zone ciblée de tissu interne (la prostate (3), par exemple) chez un patient tout en épargnant une zone adjacente de tissu interne bénin (un faisceau neurovasculaire (1), par exemple). Une gaine creuse (16) ou un ballonnet (24), porté par un cathéter à ballonnet (20, 20-1), est placé dans une ouverture d'accès faite par un trocart (10) inséré entre la zone de tissu cible nécessitant un traitement et la zone de tissu bénin à protéger afin de maintenir la zone de tissu protégée séparée de la zone de tissu cible et hors d'atteinte de la température létale de la zone létale. Le ballonnet (24) du cathéter à ballonnet (20, 20-1) est gonflé dans l'ouverture d'accès par un canal de ballonnet (26) qui s'étend longitudinalement dans le cathéter. Un capteur de température (40, 42) au moins est monté sur le ballonnet (24) et il est sensible à la température se trouvant à proximité de la zone de tissu bénin à protéger. Le ballonnet (24) est chauffé ou refroidit par un fil chauffant (34) ou un fluide en circulation, en fonction de la température détectée par le capteur de température (40, 42).
