Provided is a liquid crystal device having a high contrast ratio in a forward direction. The liquid crystal device comprises a liquid crystal cell, a first polarizing plate arranged on one side of the liquid crystal cell, a second polarizing plate arranged on the other side of the liquid crystal cell, and a phase difference layer arranged between the liquid crystal cell and the second polarizing plate. The liquid crystal device uses a liquid crystal panel, in which a refractive index oval element of the phase difference layer indicates relations of nx ≥ ny > nz and in which the second polarizing plate has a transmittivity (T2) larger than the transmittivity (T1) of the first polarizing plate. This liquid crystal panel exhibits such display characteristics as have a drastically higher and more excellent contrast ratio in the forward direction than that of the liquid crystal panel of the prior art, in which two polarizing plates arranged on the two sides of the liquid crystal cell have equal transmittivities.

L'invention concerne un dispositif à cristaux liquides présentant un rapport de contraste élevé vers l'avant. Le dispositif à cristaux liquides comprend une cellule à cristaux liquides, une première plaque de polarisation disposée d'un côté de la cellule à cristaux liquides, une seconde plaque de polarisation disposée de l'autre côté de la cellule à cristaux liquides, et une couche de différence de phase disposée entre la cellules à cristaux liquides et la seconde plaque de polarisation. Le dispositif à cristaux liquides utilise un panneau à cristaux liquides, dans lequel un élément oval à indice de réfraction de la couche de différence de phase indique les relations de nx ≥ ny > nz, et dans lequel la seconde plaque de polarisation possède une transmittivité (T2) supérieure à la transmittivité (T1) de la première plaque de polarisation. Ce panneau à cristaux liquides présente des caractéristiques d'affichage d'un rapport de contraste nettement plus élevé et nettement meilleur vers l'avant que celui du panneau à cristaux liquides de l'art antérieur, dans lequel deux plaques de polarisation disposées des deux côtés de la cellule à cristaux liquides possèdent une transmittivité égale.

 本発明の目的は、正面方向のコントラスト比が高い液晶表示装置を提供することである。  液晶セルと、該液晶セルの一方の側に配置された第1の偏光板と、該液晶セルの他方の側に配置された第2の偏光板と、該液晶セルと該第2の偏光板との間に配置された位相差層を少なくとも備え、該位相差層の屈折率楕円体が、nx≧ny>nzの関係を示し、該第2の偏光板の透過率(T)が、該第1の偏光板の透過率(T)よりも大きい、液晶パネルを用いる。このような液晶パネルは、従来の、例えば、液晶セルの両側に配置した2枚の偏光板の透過率が同一である液晶パネルよりも、正面方向のコントラスト比が格段に高く、優れた表示特性を示す。
