A light from a light emitting element module is emitted at a wide angle longitudinally of an illumination device. The illumination device comprises a plurality of light emitting element modules (1) each having a light emitting element (1a), a mounting member (2) for mounting the light emitting element modules (1), and a post (4) for supporting the mounting member (2). This mounting member (2) is so bent at a plurality of stages that the lights from the light emitting element modules (1) mounted on the mounting member (2) may be directed in a plurality of different directions. The mounting member (2) is bent in such a plurality of stages that an angle (&thetas;1-2) made between the main optical axis line (L1-2) of a light emitting element module (1-2) mounted on the portion of the leading end side of the mounting member (2) and a horizontal plane (HL) may be smaller than an angle (&thetas;1-8) made between the main optical axis line (L1-8) of a light emitting element module (1-8) mounted on the portion of the root side of the mounting member (2) and the horizontal plane (HL).
