Techniques are provided for reducing feedback while maintaining performance in a MIMO-OFDM system. The disclosed techniques employ finite- rate feedback methods that uses vector quantization compression. The disclosed methods/techniques generally involve: receiving a plurality of symbols from a plurality of sub-carriers at a receiver; selecting a plurality of indices of codewords corresponding to a codebook of pre-coding weighting matrices for the sub-carriers based on vector quantization compression of the codewords; and transmitting the selected indices over a wireless channel to a transmitter. Finite state vector quantization feedback makes use of a finite state vector quantizer (FSVQ), which is a recursive vector quantizer (VQ) with a finite number of states. In finite state vector quantization feedback, optimal precoding matrices (beamforming vectors) are selected sequentially across subcarriers. In a trellis-based feedback method, the optimal precoding matrices are selected at the same time for all subcarriers by searching for the optimum choice of matrices along a trellis using the Viterbi algorithm (dynamic programming).

L'invention concerne des techniques de réduction d'une réaction tout en maintenant le niveau de performance dans un système MIMO-OFDM. Les techniques de l'invention sont mises en oeuvre par des procédés de réaction finie associés à une compression de quantification vectorielle. Les procédés/techniques de l'invention consistent généralement à recevoir une pluralité de symboles d'une pluralité de sous-porteuses au niveau d'un récepteur; à sélectionner une pluralité d'indices de mots codés correspondant à une liste de codage de matrices de pondération de précodage pour les sous-porteuses en fonction de la compression de quantification vectorielle des mots codés; et à transmettre les indices sélectionnés sur un canal sans fil à un émetteur. La réaction de quantification vectorielle à nombre fini d'états est associée à l'utilisation d'un quantificateur vectoriel à l'état fini (FSVQ), qui est un quantificateur vectoriel récursif (VQ) avec un nombre fini d'états. Dans la réaction de quantification vectorielle à nombre fini d'états, des matrices de précodage optimal (vecteurs de mise en forme de faisceau) sont sélectionnées en même temps pour toutes les sous-porteuses par recherche du choix optimal des matrices le long d'un treillis au moyen d'un algorithme de Viterbi (programmation dynamique).
