The present invention relates to compositions and methods for sorbing (e.g., adsorption and chemisorption) and destroying organophosphate chemical agents using finely divided, modified nanoscale metal oxide particles. In certain embodiments, a suspension of magnetite (Fe304) nanoparticles modified with 2-pralidoxime, poly (4-vinylpyridine-N-phenacyloxime-co-acrylic acid), poly (1-vinylimidazole-co-acrolein oxime-co-acrylic acid), or oximated humic acid, catalyzes the hydrolysis of organophosphate compounds at a neutral pH. The oxime-modif ied magnetite particles serve as a nano-sized particulate carrier with a powerful alpha-nucleophile, an oximate group, immobilized on its surface. The oxime-modif ied magnetite nanoparticles are colloidally stable at neutral pH and they are readily recovered from the aqueous milieu by high-gradient magnetic separation methods.

La présente invention concerne des compositions convenant pour la sorption (adsorption ou chimisorption notamment) et pour la destruction d'agents chimiques organophosphatés. Dans certains modes de réalisation, l'invention s'intéresse à l'utilisation de particules d'oxyde métallique de taille nanométrique,modifiées, finement divisées. Dans d'autres modes de réalisation, une suspension de magnétite (Fe3O4) modifiée avec du 2-pralidoxime, un acide poly(4-vinylpyridine-N-phénacyloxime) co-acrylique, un acide poly(vinylimidazole-co-acroléine oxime)co-acrylique ou un acide humique oximaté, catalyse l'hydrolyse de composés organophosphatés à un pH neutre. Les particules de magnétite modifiées oxime font office de vecteur de particules de taille nanométrique avec un α-nucléophile puissant, un groupe oximate, immobilisées sur sa surface. Les nanoparticules de magnétite modifiées oxime sont stables au plan colloïdal à un pH neutre et peuvent être facilement extraites du milieu aqueux par des méthodes de séparation magnétique à gradient élevé. De plus,certains aspects de l'invention concernent uniquement la préparation et l'utilisation d'un composé contenant l'α-nucléophile, ou un polymère (c'est-à-dire sans nanoparticule métallique).
