The invention relates to a method for determining calving characteristics in bovine subjects, wherein calving characteristics comprise stillbirth, calving difficulty and calf size at birth, which are all economically important factors. In particular, the method of the invention involves identification of genetic markers and/or Quantitative Trait Locus (QTL) for the determination of calving characteristics in a bovine subject. The determination of calving characteristics involves resolution of the specific microsatellite status. Furthermore, the invention relates to a diagnostic kit for detection of genetic marker(s) associated with calving characteristics. The method and kit of the present invention can be applied for selection of bovine subjects for breeding purposes. Thus, the invention provides a method of genetically selecting bovine subjects with calving characteristics that will yield cows less prone to stillbirth, calving difficulties and undesired calf size at birth.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de déterminer des caractéristiques de vêlage chez des sujets bovins. Ces caractéristiques comprenant la mise bas d'un mort-né, la difficulté de vêlage et la taille du veau à la naissance, sont toutes des facteurs économiques importants. Plus précisément, le procédé selon l'invention implique l'identification de marqueurs génétiques et/ou du locus quantitatif (QTL) pour déterminer les caractéristiques de vêlage chez le sujet bovin. La détermination de ces caractéristiques implique la résolution de l'état microsatellitaire spécifique. En outre, l'invention concerne une trousse de diagnostic pour détecter un(des) marqueur(s) associé(s) à ces caractéristiques. Le procédé et la trousse selon l'invention peuvent servir à la sélection de sujets bovins à des fins de reproduction. Ainsi, l'invention concerne un procédé permettant de sélectionner génétiquement des sujets bovins présentant des caractéristiques de vêlage qui donneront lieu à des vaches moins susceptibles à la mise bas de mort-né, à des difficultés de vêlage, et à des mises bas de veau de taille non recherchée.
