Provided is a method for synthesising a substantially size homogenous composition of titanium (IV) oxide (titania) nanoparticles comprising, synthesising a titania inorganic crystalline matrix within a sol gel reaction process under conditions that constrain the growth of the matrix such that a majority of the nanoparticles are of a narrow size distribution in the composition and do not exceed a maximum diameter of around l00nm. The sol gel reaction process can occur under aqueous conditions, or within an organic polymer matrix under non-aqueous conditions. Aqueous dispersions and pastes comprising the substantially size homogenous composition of titanium (IV) oxide nanoparticles are also provided. The titanium (IV) oxide nanoparticles demonstrate improved photoactivity when exposed to UV irradiation, and can also include visible light absorbing centres such that activity is extended into the visible light range.

L'invention concerne un procédé qui permet de synthétiser une composition de nanoparticules d'oxyde de titane (IV) (dioxyde de titane) de tailles sensiblement homogènes, lequel procédé consiste à synthétiser une matrice cristalline inorganique de dioxyde de titane au cours d'un processus de réaction sol-gel dans des conditions qui limitent la croissance de la matrice, de telle manière qu'une majorité des nanoparticules possèdent une distribution granulométrique étroite dans la composition, leur diamètre ne dépassant pas 100nm environ. Le processus de réaction sol-gel peut se produire dans des conditions aqueuses, ou à l'intérieur d'une matrice polymère organique dans des conditions non aqueuses. L'invention se rapporte également à des dispersions aqueuses et à des pâtes renfermant la composition de nanoparticules d'oxyde de titane (IV) de tailles sensiblement homogènes. Les nanoparticules d'oxyde de titane (IV) montrent une photoactivité améliorée lorsqu'elles sont exposées aux rayonnements UV, et peuvent aussi comprendre des centres absorbant la lumière visible de sorte que leur activité se prolonge dans la plage de la lumière visible.
