(EN)An organic electroluminescent device comprising: a transparent substrate (10); a first electrode (12); a second reflective electrode (22) and an organic light-emitting region (18) for emitting light of a wavelength from a recombination zone (24) within the light-emissive region (18), and a microcavity formed between the substrate (10) and the second electrode (22), the distance between the transparent substrate (10) and the second electrode (22) being [(l/4ni)l + (l/2nj)al] ± 40nm, where a is zero or a positive integer, ni is an average refractive index of the material disposed between the recombination zone (24) and the second electrode (22) and nj is an average refractive index of the material disposed between the recombination zone (24) and the substrate (10).
