A system and method for signaling low-to-high layer switching points in a file format level to enable efficient scalable stream switching in streaming servers and local file playback. The present invention also provides for a system and method for signaling low-to-high layer switching points in video bit stream, e.g., to enable intelligent forwarding of scalability layers in media-aware network elements or computationally scalable decoding in stream recipients.

L'invention concerne un système et un procédé de signalisation de points de commutation de couches inférieures à couches supérieures dans un niveau de format fichier facilitant une commutation de flux modulable efficace au niveau des serveurs en continu et de la lecture de fichiers locaux. L'invention concerne en outre un système et un procédé de signalisation de points de commutation de couches inférieures à couches supérieures en flux binaire vidéo, par exemple pour faciliter la transmission intelligente de couches d'échelonnabilité au niveau des éléments de réseaux sensibles aux multimédia ou le décodage modulable en termes de calcul chez les destinataires de flux.
