A carrier structure has a plurality of cells. A corresponding plurality of objects having data carriers, such as radio frequency identification (RFID) tag, is placed in each cell. Each cell has an indicator associated therewith and is defined by walls that substantially prevent waves (such as RF waves) from propagating between cells. A control module is coupled to the carrier structure and is operative to selectively activate individual ones of the indicators. An automatic data collection device (such as an RFID reader) interrogates the data carriers of the objects placed in the cells, and the data carriers can provide response signals to the data collection device. The control module also monitors the response signals using an antenna present in each cell. If the data collection device selects a particular one of the responsive data carriers, the data collection device provides a notification signal to the control module to notify the control module of the selection. The control module then identifies and selects the cell of an object of interest having the selected data carrier affixed thereon, and initiates activation of the indicator associated with the selected cell, thereby identifying the location of the object of interest.

On décrit une structure d'accueil à plusieurs cellules, et une série correspondante d'objets à supports de données du type étiquettes RFID que l'on place dans chaque cellule, ce qui donne pour chaque cellule un indicateur associé, défini par des parois qui empêchent sensiblement les ondes (par exemple HF) de se propager entre les cellules. Un module de contrôle est couplé à la structure, opérationnel pour l'activation sélective de tel ou tel indicateur. Un dispositif de collecte automatique de données (par exemple lecteur RFID) interroge les supports de données des objets placés dans les cellules, et ces supports peuvent fournir des signaux de réponse au dispositif de collecte. Le module de contrôle surveille pour sa part les signaux en question via une antenne présente dans chaque cellule. Si le dispositif de collecte sélectionne un support de données spécifique, celui-ci fournit un signal de notification au module de contrôle pour lui notifier la sélection, et le module de contrôle identifie et sélectionne la cellule d'un objet visé sur lequel est fixé le support de données choisi, activant alors l'indicateur associé à la cellule choisie, et identifiant l'emplacement de l'objet visé.
