A testing apparatus comprising: a chamber (5) having an inlet (6) and an outlet (16) ; a measuring device (4) , at least a part of which is provided within said chamber; wherein the inlet is arranged to direct fluid onto said part of the measuring device within the chamber in order to clean the measuring device during start up. Thus the density or viscosity of drilling mud may be continuously monitored. Preferred embodiments include an outlet valve such as a ball valve (7) with a bore defined therein. The bore allows fluid to flow therethrough even in a valve 'closed' position and so generates the preferred back pressure whilst minimising the risk that the valve will block. A pressure activated drain valve (9) is also provided to substantially empty the chamber when not in use. When the apparatus is reactivated, an inlet tube is adapted to jet air and then fluid at the measuring device in order to remove debris therefrom. Thus the apparatus has the important benefit of self cleaning during start-up.

La présente invention concerne un appareil d’essai qui comprend : une chambre (5) possédant une entrée (6) et une sortie (16) ; un dispositif de mesure (4), dont au moins une partie se trouve dans ladite chambre ; l’entrée étant disposée de manière à guider le fluide vers ladite partie du dispositif de mesure à l’intérieur de la chambre lors de la mise en marche. Ainsi, la densité ou la viscosité de la boue de forage peut être surveillée en continu. Les modes de réalisation préférés comprennent une valve de sortie telle un clapet à bille (7) dans lequel est défini un alésage. L’alésage permet au fluide de s’en écouler même dans une position de valve 'fermée' et génère ainsi la pression de retour souhaitée tout en minimisant le risque que la valve se bloque. Une valve de purge (9) actionnée sous pression est également prévue afin de vider sensiblement la chambre lorsqu’elle n’est pas utilisée. Lorsque l’appareil est remis en marche, un tube d’entrée projette de l’air, puis un fluide sur le dispositif de mesure afin d’en retirer les déblais. Ainsi, l’appareil présente un avantage de taille en s’autonettoyant lors de sa mise en marche.
