1. (WO2007007227) METHOD OF CONTROLLING A CONTROL POINT POSITION ON A COMMAND AREA AND METHOD FOR CONTROL OF A DEVICE

CLAIMS:

1. A method of controlling a position (x1, y') of a control point (C) on a command area (ACM), which method comprises the steps of:
aiming a pointing device (1) comprising a camera (2) in the direction of the command area (ACM);
- generating an image (I) of a target area (Ai) aimed at by the pointing device;
processing the target area image (I) to determine a target point (T) at which the pointing device (1) is aimed;
determining the position (x1, y') of the control point (C) depending on the position (x, y) of the target point (T) within a currently defined control area (ACT), which control area (ACT) at least partially includes the command area (ACM).

2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the dimensions and/or location of the control area (ACT) are defined according to the momentary pointing conditions and/or control situation.

3. A method according to claim 2, wherein the dimensions of the control area (ACT) are defined according to the distance (r) between the pointing device (1) and the command area (ACM).

4. A method according to claim 2, wherein the dimensions of the control area (ACT) are extended if the distance (r) between the pointing device (1) and the command area (ACM) exceeds a certain limit.

5. A method according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein an extension factor α, which defines the ratio of the dimensions of the control area (ACT) to the dimensions of the command area (ACM), is - at least in a certain distance range - proportional to the distance (r) between the pointing device (1) and the command area (ACM).

6. A method according to any of claims 1 to 5, wherein the dimensions of the control area (ACT) are extended if the user is aiming the pointing device (1) at a target point (T) outside of the current control area (ACT).

7. A method according to any of claims 1 to 6, wherein the dimensions of the control area (ACT) are decreased after a certain time period during which the user is not aiming the pointing device (1) at a target point (T) outside of a certain region of the current control area (ACT).

8. A method according to any of claims 1 to 7, wherein control areas (ACT, ACT1) of adjacent command areas (ACM, ACM1) are chosen so that the control areas (ACT, ACT1) do not overlap.

9. A method according to any of claims 1 to 8, wherein a command area (ACM, ACM') can be activated by aiming at a certain region (AAC, AAC) of the command area (ACM, ACM1), and an extended control area (ACT, ACT1) associated with the currently active command area (ACM, ACM1) is chosen so that it does not overlap with at least a certain region (AAC, AAC) of an adjacent command area (ACM, ACM1)-

10. A method for control of a device (D1, D2), which method comprises the steps of:
- aiming a pointing device (1) comprising a camera (2) in the direction of a command area (ACM) associated with the device (D1, D2) to be controlled, upon which command area (ACM) a number of options (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6) for controlling the device (D1, D2) are presented
generating an image (I) of a target area (Ai) aimed at by the pointing device (1);
processing the target area image (I) to determine the target point (T) at which the pointing device (1) is aimed;
determining the chosen option (M5) depending on the position (x1, y') of a control point (C) within the command area (ACM), wherein the control point position (x1, y') is controlled according to any of claims 1 to 9.

11. A system for controlling a position (x1, y') of a control point (C) on a command area (ACM) comprising:
a pointing device (1) which comprises a camera (2) for generating images (I) of a target area (Ai) in the direction (P) of pointing;
- an image processing unit (3) for processing the target area image (I) to determine the target point (T) at which the pointing device (1) is aimed;
a control point position calculation unit (4) for determining position (x1, y') of the control point (C) depending on the position (x, y) of the target point (T) within a currently defined control area, (ACT) which control area (ACT) includes at least partially the command area (ACM), and
a control point visualisation unit (8) for visualisation of the control point (C) on the command area (ACM).

12. A system for controlling a device (D1, D2) comprising
- a command area (ACM) for visually presenting user options (M1, M2, M3,

M4, M5, M6) for the device to be controlled;
a system for controlling the position (x1, y') of a control point (C) on the command area (ACM) according to claim 11, and
an interpreting unit (9) for determining the chosen option (Ms)
depending on the position (x1, y') of the control point (C) within the command area (ACM).

13. A pointing device ( 1 ) for controlling a position (x1, y') of a control point (C) on a command area (ACM) comprising:
- a camera (2) for generating images (I) of a target area (Ai) in the direction (P) of pointing;

an image processing unit (3) for processing the target area image (I) to determine the target point (T) at which the pointing device (1) is aimed;
a control point position calculation unit (4) for determining position (x1, y') of the control point (C) depending on the position (x, y) of the target point (T) within a currently defined control area (ACT) which control area (ACT) includes at least partially the command area (ACM).
