1. (WO2007007167) FLASHLAMP CARTRIDGE FOR REMOVABLE CONNECTION TO A SOCKET

CLAIMS
What is claimed is:
1. A flashlamp cartridge comprising:
a cartridge portion for a flashlamp (1);
cooling device components for a cooling device (11, 12) for the flashlamp; one or more thermal cartridge terminals (13) for the cooling device for thermally connecting the flashlamp cartridge to a socket; and
one or more electrical cartridge terminals (14) for the flashlamp for
electrically connecting the flashlamp cartridge to the socket.

2. The flashlamp cartridge according to claim 1, wherein the cooling device components include parts of a duct for a cooling fluid, preferably water or gas, with the duct being designed for flowing fluid around at least a part of the flashlamp.

3. The flashlamp cartridge according to claim 2, wherein a part of the wall of the duct is formed of a transparent material (15), preferably a plane, transparent plate.

4. The flashlamp cartridge according to claim 2 or 3, comprising a reflector (5) preferably provided in the duct.

5. The flashlamp cartridge according to claim 2 or 3, comprising a reflector (5) forming a part of the wall of the duct.

6. The flashlamp cartridge according to claim 5, wherein the reflector forms the partition wall between the inflow (11) and the backflow (12).

7. The flashlamp cartridge according to claim 3, comprising a waveguide set upon the transparent material.

8. The flashlamp cartridge according to one or more of the preceding claims, comprising at least a valve means (54) for the cooling fluid.

9. The flashlamp cartridge according to one or more of the preceding claims, comprising a mechanical connection means (16) for the connection to a socket.

10. The flashlamp cartridge according to one or more of the preceding claims, comprising a first identification means (18) for identifying the flashlamp cartridge.

11. The flashlamp cartridge according to one or more of the preceding claims, wherein the electrical cartridge terminals (14) include terminals for energy and/or for control signals of the flashlamp.

12. The flashlamp cartridge according to one or more of the preceding claims, comprising an enclosure (17), in which the cartridge portion for the flashlamp (1) and the cooling device components for the cooling device (11, 12) are located and to which the thermal cartridge terminals (13) and the electrical cartridge terminals (14) are attached.

13. The flashlamp cartridge according to claim 12, wherein the enclosure (17) includes a first enclosure part (17a), a second enclosure part (17b) and a window formed of the transparent material (15).

14. The flashlamp cartridge according to one or more of the preceding claims, wherein the thermal cartridge terminals (13) and the electrical cartridge terminals (14) are located at one side of the flashlamp cartridge, preferably at one side of the enclosure (17) according to claim 12.

15. The flashlamp cartridge according to one or more of the preceding claims, wherein the thermal cartridge terminals (13) and/or the electrical cartridge terminals (14) include plug type connections.

16. The flashlamp cartridge according to one or more of the preceding claims, comprising one or more electrical operation members (53).

17. The flashlamp cartridge according to one or more of the preceding claims, comprising one or more of the following features:
total length h > 5 cm, particularly > 10 cm, < 50 cm, particularly < 20 cm; total depth t > 5 mm, < 6 cm, preferably < 4 cm;
total width b > 1 cm, < 6 cm, preferably < 4 cm;

as constructional material it includes plastics and/or ceramics and/or metal and/or quartz glass;
it includes an optical filter;
it includes a light diffuser;
it includes focussing means, in particular a Fresnel lens; and
it includes a polarizer.

18. A flashlamp assembly comprising
a flashlamp cartridge (10) according to one or more of claims 1 to 17; and a flashlamp (1) accommodated in the flashlamp cartridge.

19. The flashlamp assembly according to claims 18 and 2, wherein the electrical terminals (2, 3) of the flashlamp (1) are located outside of the duct (11, 12).

20. The flashlamp assembly according to claims 19 and 2, wherein the electrical terminals (2, 3) of the flashlamps (1) are located inside the duct.

21. The flashlamp assembly according to one or more of claims 18 to 20, comprising one or more of the following features:
average radiation performance > 20 W, preferably > 50 W, < 1,000 W, preferably < 500W;
the flashlamp is straight or bent in a U shape.

22. A socket for a flashlamp assembly, the assembly including electrical and thermal cartridge terminals for the flashlamp and being preferably formed according to one or more of claims 18 to 20, comprising:
electrical socket terminals (24) for the flashlamp cartridge; and
thermal socket terminals (23) for the flashlamp cartridge.

23. The socket according to claim 22, comprising at least one valve means for a cooling fluid.

24. The socket according to claim 22 or 23, comprising a mechanical connection means (25) for mechanically connecting to the flashlamp assembly.

25. The socket according to one or more of claims 22 to 24, comprising a mechanical orientation means for mechanically orienting the flashlamp assembly.

26. The socket according to one or more of claims 22 to 25, comprising a second identification means (10) for identifying the flashlamp cartridge.

27. An electrical device comprising a basic device (41) and a socket (20) according to claims 22 to 26.

28. The device according to claim 27, which is a therapeutic device.

29. The device according to claim 27 or 28, wherein the socket is connected to the basic device (41) via a flexible cable train (45).

30. The device according to one or more of claims 27 to 29, comprising a monitoring means for monitoring the flashlamp, which measures the operating time of the flashlamp or counts its light pulses.

31. The flashlamp assembly according to one or more of claims 18 to 21 , which may be plugged into a socket according to one or more of claims 22 to 26 and pulled out thereof.

32. The flashlamp assembly according to one or more of claims 18 to 21, which is formed as an exchangeable cartridge completely enclosing the flashlamp.

33. A cartridge for a flashlamp, said cartridge adapted to be connected to a socket, said cartridge comprising:
a body having a support for holding a flashlamp;
a window connected to the body and positioned to be aligned with the flashlamp;
a reflector aligned with the flashlamp on the side opposite the window;
a cooling duct formed in the body and in thermal communication with the flashlamp;

a first connector to provide fluid communication between the socket and the cooling duct in the body; and
a second connector to provide an electrical connection between the socket and the flashlamp.

34. A cartridge as recited in claim 33, wherein the window forms a portion of a wall of the duct.

35. A cartridge as recited in claim 33, wherein the reflector forms a portion of a wall of the duct.

36. A cartridge as recited in claim 33, wherein the first connector defines a fluid inlet to the duct and a third connector provides a fluid outlet from the duct to the socket.

37. A cartridge as recited in claim 33, wherein said first connector includes a valve.

38. A cartridge as recited in claim 33, further including an identification means to provide information to the socket.

39. A cartridge as recited in claim 33, wherein the identification means provides information about the cartridge to the socket.

40. A cartridge as recited in claim 33, wherein the identification means provides information about the flashlamp to the socket.

41. A flashlamp assembly adapted to be connected to a base plate comprising a cartridge for holding a flashlamp;
means for providing an electrical connection to the lamp, said electrical connection means including a quick release connection to the base plate;
means for providing fluid flow directed about the flashlamp, said flow means including a quick release connection to the base plate, said flow means being physically separated from the electrical connection means, said flow means including cooling ducts; and
a reflector forming a portion of the cooling ducts.

42. A flashlamp assembly as recited in claim 41 , further including validation hardware for carrying information about the flashlamp and which is operable to generate a signal that can control the operation of the lamp.

43. A flashlamp assembly as recited in claim 42, wherein said validation hardware operates at a lower voltage than the flashlamp voltage.
