CLAIMS.

1. A ligand of formula I


resulting from the reaction between a beta-diimine of formula Il and a compound of formula III


wherein Ri, R2, R3, R4, R5, Re, R7, Re, R9 and R10 are each independently selected from hydrogen, unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbyl, or inert functional group and two or more groups can be linked together to form further ring or rings, with the restriction that R1 and R3, R2 and R4, and R9 and R10, cannot be simultaneously oxazoline, and wherein Z is selected from groups 15 or 16 of the Periodic Table and m is the valence of Z minus one.

2. The ligand of claim 1 wherein Ri and R2 are unsubstituted or substituted alkyl groups, unsubstituted or substituted aryl groups, unsubstituted or substituted cycloalkyl groups,

3. The ligand of claim 2 wherein Ri and R2 are unsubstituted or substituted phenyl groups.

4. The ligand of any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein R3 and R4 are unsubstituted or substituted alkyl groups, unsubstituted or substituted aryl groups, unsubstituted or substituted cycloalkyl groups.

5. The ligand of claim 4 wherein R3 and R4 are unsubstituted or substituted alkyl groups.

6. The ligand of claim 5 wherein R3 and R4 are linked together to form a cyclohexyl ring.

7. The ligand of any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein R5 is hydrogen or methyl.

8. The ligand of any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein Z is N, P, O or S.

9. The ligand of any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein R6, R7, Re, Rg and R10 are unsubstituted or substituted alkyl groups, unsubstituted or substituted aryl groups, unsubstituted or substituted cycloalkyl groups.

10. A catalyst component of formula IV



IV wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, Re, R7, Re, R9 and R10 are as defined in any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein M is a metal Group 3 to 10 of the Periodic Table, wherein X' are the same or different and are halogen or substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl and wherein n is the valence of M.

11. The catalyst component of claim 10 wherein M is Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd or rare earth.

12. A method for preparing the catalyst component of claim 10 or claim 11 by complexing of the ligand of any one of claims 1 to 9 with metallic salt MX'n in a solvent.

13. An active catalyst system comprising the catalyst component of claim 10 or claim 11 and an activating agent having an ionizing action.

14. An active catalyst system comprising the catalyst component of claim 10 or claim 11 , an activating support and optionally a cocatalyst.

15. The active catalyst system of claim 14 wherein M is Cr.

16. A method fror oligomerising or homo- or co-polymerising ethylene and alpha- olefins that comprises the steps of:

a) injecting the active catalyst system of any one of claims 13 to 15 into the reactor;
b) injecting the monomer and optional comonomer either before or after or simultaneously with step a);
c) maintaining under polymerisation conditions;
d) retrieving oligomers or a polymer.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the monomer and optional comonomer are selected from ethylene, propylene or 1-hexene.

18. The method of claim 16 or claim 17 wherein the optional comonomer is a polar functionalised alpha-olefin.

19. The method of claim 16 wherein the step a) is the injection of the active catalyst system of claim 15.

20. A polyethylene obtained by the method of claim 19 wherein the monomer is ethylene.
