Claims

1. A polyethylene composition, comprising a base resin which comprises (i) a first fraction which is an ethylene homo- or copolymer, and
(ii) a second fraction which is an ethylene copolymer,
wherein the first fraction (i) has a lower weight average molecular weight than the second fraction (ii), and the base resin has a density of less than 0.940 g/cm3 and a shear thinning index SHI2 7Z21O of at least 25.
2. The polyethylene composition according to claim 1, wherein the base resin has a flow rate ratio FRR2172 of at least 45.
3. The polyethylene composition according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the base resin further comprises a third fraction (iii) which is an ethylene homo- or copolymer having a weight average molecular weight which is higher than the weight average molecular weight of the first fraction (i) and is different from the weight average molecular weight of the second fraction (ii).
4. A polyethylene composition, comprising a base resin which comprises (i) a first fraction which is an ethylene homo- or copolymer,
(ii) a second fraction which is an ethylene copolymer, and
(iii) a third fraction which is an ethylene homo- or copolymer,
wherein the first fraction (i) has a lower weight average molecular weight than the second fraction (ii), the third fraction (iii) has a weight average molecular weight which is higher than the weight average molecular weight of the first fraction (i) and is different from the weight average molecular weight of the second fraction(ii), the base resin has a density of less than 0.940 g/cm3 and a flow rate ratio FRR21/2 of at least 45.

5. The polyethylene composition according to claim 4, wherein the base resin has a shear thinning index SHI2.7/2io of at least 25.
6. The polyethylene composition according to one of the preceding claims, wherein the base resin has a melt flow rate MFR21-6kg/i 90°c of more than 40 g/10 min.

7. The polyethylene composition according to one of the preceding claims, wherein the fraction (i) has a density of more than 0.931 g/cm3.

8. The polyethylene composition according to one of the preceding claims, wherein the base resin has a molecular weight distribution Mw/Mn of more than 15.

9. A polyethylene composition, comprising a base resin which comprises

(i) a first fraction which is an ethylene homo- or copolymer, and
(ii) a second fraction which is an ethylene copolymer,

wherein the first fraction (i) has a lower weight average molecular weight than the second fraction (ii), the base resin has a density of less than 0.940 g/cm3 and a melt flow rate MFR21.6kg/i90°c of more than 40 g/10 min, and the fraction (i) has a density of more than 0.931 g/cm3.

10. The polyethylene composition according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the base resin has a molecular weight distribution Mw/Mn of more than 15.

11. A polyethylene composition, comprising a base resin which comprises
(i) a first fraction which is an ethylene homo- or copolymer, and

(ii) a second fraction which is an ethylene copolymer,

wherein the first fraction (i) has a lower weight average molecular weight than the second fraction (ii), the base resin has a density of less than 0.940 g/cm3 and the base resin has a molecular weight distribution Mw/Mn of more than 15.

12. The polyethylene composition according to claim 11, wherein the fraction (i) has a density of more than 0.931 g/cm3.

13. The polyethylene composition according to claim 11 or 12, wherein the base resin has a melt flow rate MFR21.6kg/19o°c of more than 40 g/10 min.

14. The polyethylene composition according to one of the claims 9 to 13, wherein the base resin has a shear ώinning index SHI2.7/21o of at least 25.
15. The polyethylene composition according to one of the claims 9 to 14, wherein the base resin further comprises a third fraction (iii) which is an ethylene homo- or copolymer fraction having a weight average molecular weight which is higher than the weight average molecular weight of the first fraction (i) and is different from the weight average molecular weight of the second fraction (ii).
16. The polyethylene composition according to one of the claims 9 to 15, wherein the base resin has a flow rate ratio FRR21/2 of at least 45.
17. The polyethylene composition according to one of the preceding claims, wherein the base resin has a flow rate ratio FRR21/2 of more than 70.
18. The polyethylene composition according to one of the preceding claims, wherein the fraction (i) has a density of more than 0.935 g/cm3.
19. The polyethylene composition according to one of the preceding claims, wherein the third fraction (iii) has a higher weight average molecular weight than the second fraction (ii).

20. The polyethylene composition according to one of the preceding claims, wherein the blend of fraction (iii) with fraction (i) has a melt flow rate MFR2. J 6kg/i90°c within the range of 20 to 700 g/10 min.
21. The polyethylene composition according to one of the preceding claims, wherein the second fraction (ii) has a melt flow rate MFR2.16kg/190°c of more than 0.01 g/10 min.
22. A process for preparing the polyethylene composition according to one of the claims 1 to 21, comprising the following steps:
(a) polymerizing ethylene, optionally with at least one alpha-olefin comonomer, to obtain a first ethylene homo- or copolymer fraction (i), and
(b) polymerizing ethylene with at least one alpha-olefin comonomer to obtain a second polyethylene copolymer fraction (ii), wherein the fractions (i) and (ii) are blended to obtain the base resin.

23. The process according to claim 22, the process being a multistage process wherein the process steps are carried out either in the sequence (a)— >(b) or (b)— >(a).

24. The process according to claim 22 or claim 23, wherein the process steps (a) and (b) are carried out in the presence of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst.

25. The process according to claim 23 or 24, wherein the process step (a) is carried out first in a slurry reactor, followed by process step (b) in a gas phase reactor to obtain a reactor blend of fractions (i) and (ii).
26. The process according to claim 25, further comprising a process step (c) for the preparation of the ethylene homo- or copolymer fraction (iii), wherein step (c) is carried out first in the presence of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst, followed by reaction steps (a) and (b), and the split between step (c) and reaction steps (a) and (b) is from 0.1 :99.9 to 10:90.
27. An article, comprising a polyethylene composition according to one of the claims 1 to 21.
28. The article according to claim 27, wherein the article is a wire or cable comprising at least one layer which comprises the composition of any of the previous claims, preferably the layer is a jacketing layer.
29. The article according to claim 27, wherein the article is a film.
30. The use of the composition as defined in any of the previous claims for producing a layer for a wire or cable, preferably for producing a jacketing layer.

31. A method for producing a wire or cable, comprising a core element power or information conducting element and one or more layers formed by extrusion, wherein at least one layer is formed from a polymer composition comprising the polyethylene compositions as defined in any of the previous claims.
