What is claimed is:

1. A drive shaft for actuating a medical/surgical tissue working member, said drive shaft comprising:
a shaft (52) having opposed proximal and distal ends, the distal of the shaft configured to hold a
medical/surgical tissue working member (50) ; and
a coupling head 54 located at the proximal end of the shaft, the coupling head having a plurality of features (303) for receiving torque from a surgical tool (20) so that the torque rotates the coupling head and the shaft,
characterized in that:
the coupling head is formed with a drive boss (302) that forms the most proximal end of the coupling head and of the shaft and the torque receiving features (303) are formed on an outer surface of said boss.

2. The drive shaft for actuating a medical/surgical tissue working member of Claim 1, wherein said coupling head is further formed with a geometric feature (306) that is spaced distal to said drive boss for receiving a locking member integral with the surgical tool for holding the coupling member to the surgical tool.

3. The drive shaft for actuating a medical/surgical tissue working member of Claim 2, wherein the geometric feature (306) for receiving the surgical tool locking member is a groove that extend at least partially around coupling head (54) .

4. The drive shaft for actuating a medical/surgical tissue working member of Claims 2 or 3, wherein: said coupling head has a cylindrical body (304) having a diameter;
said drive boss (302) extends proximally relative to said body and has a cross sectional length less than the diameter of said body; and
said geometric feature (306) for receiving the tool locking member is formed in the body.

5. The drive shaft for actuating a medical/surgical tissue working member of Claim 4, wherein said coupling head body (304) is formed with a feature (308) for aligning said torque receiving features (303) with torque transmitting features of the surgical tool.

6. The drive shaft for actuating a medical/surgical tissue working member of Claims 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, wherein:
the coupling head (54) including said drive boss (302) is configured to seat in a rotating spindle (42) of the surgical tool, the spindle having an open distal end from which the drive shaft extends, the open distal, the coupling head having a cross sectional width; and
a shoulder (305) is located forward of the drive coupling said shoulder having a cross sectional width that is greater than the cross sectional width of the coupling head; and
the drive coupling and said shoulder are dimensioned so that when the drive coupling is disposed in the surgical tool spindle, said shoulder abuts the open distal end of the spindle .

7. The drive shaft for actuating a medical/surgical tissue working member of Claims 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6, wherein said boss has a plurality of arcuately spaced apart faces that form the torque receiving features .

8. The drive shaft for actuating a medical/surgical tissue working member of Claims 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7, wherein said shaft is part of an attachment (320) the attachment having a coupling assembly for receiving and driving the tissue working member.

9. A surgical tool (20) including:
a housing (22) ;
a motor (24) disposed in said housing;
a spindle (42) rotatably mounted to the housing and connected to the motor for rotation by the motor, the spindle having: a distal opening bore (120) for receiving the drive shaft of a cutting accessory; torque transmitting faces for transferring torque to the cutting accessory drive shaft; and a locking members for releaseably holding the cutting accessory drive shaft in the spindle bore,
characterized in that:
the spindle is formed so that the bore has a distal section and a proximal end section (104) that forms the most proximal end of the bore, wherein the spindle torque
transmitting faces define the spindle bore proximal end section; and
at least one locking member is mounted to the spindle to rotate with the spindle and to move in and out of the bore distal section so as to releasable engage the cutting accessory drive shaft.

10. The surgical tool of Claim 9, wherein said spindle is formed so that: the bore distal section has a circular cross sectional profile and a diameter; and the bore proximal end section has a cross sectional length less than the diameter of the bore distal end section.

11. The surgical tool of Claims 9 or 10, wherein:
the spindle is formed with an opening (114) that opens into the spindle bore distal section; and
said locking member comprises at least one lock pin (240) seated in the spindle opening to move in and out of the spindle bore distal section; and
a latch mechanism is mounted to said housing to
selectively hold said lock mechanism is the spindle bore distal section.

12. The surgical tool of Claim 11, wherein:
the spindle is formed with a plurality of openings (114);
a separate said lock pin (240) is said in each of the spindle openings;
said latch mechanism selectively holds each said lock pin in the spindle bore distal end section.

13. The surgical tool of Claims 11 or 12, wherein:
said latch mechanism includes a spring (254) that imposes a biasing force on said lock pin to hold said lock pin the spindle bore distal section; and
the spindle opening is shaped so that, when the cutting accessory drive shaft is inserted in the spindle bore, the force of the insertion of the drive shaft can overcome the biasing force of said spring holding said lock pin.

14. The surgical tool of Claims 9, 10, 11, 12 or 13, further including a clutch assembly disposed in said housing between said motor and said spindle said clutch assembly having two drive heads (86, 94) that are connected to said motor to rotate at different speeds upon actuation of the motor and a shifter that selectively couples one of said drive heads to the spindle so that the spindle rotates with the drive head to which the spindle is connected.

15. A surgical tool comprising:
a housing (22) ;
a motor (24) disposed in the housing, the motor having a rotating shaft (26) ;
a gear train assembly (36) mounted to the housing, said gear train assembly having a plurality of drive heads (86, 92) that are connected to the motor shaft to rotate at different speeds upon actuation of the motor shaft;
a spindle (42) rotatably mounted to the housing, the spindle shaft shaped to receive the proximal end of a medical/surgical cutting accessory (48) ; and
a clutch assembly disposed in said housing, said clutch assembly selectively coupling one of the gear train drive heads to the spindle so that the spindle rotates with the drive head to which .the spindle is coupled,
characterized in that:
the clutch includes:
an outer coupler (124) having a distal section attached to the spindle disposed over the spindle to rotate in unison with the spindle and a proximal section disposed over the gear train assembly drive heads; and
a first shifter (180) disposed over said outer coupler and configured to rotate with and move
longitudinally with respect to said outer coupler and to selectively couple said outer coupler to one of the drive heads so that said first shifter and said outer coupler rotate with the drive head to which said first shifter- is coupled.

16. The surgical tool of Claim 15, wherein:
said outer coupler is formed to define in the proximal section at least one slot (134) that subtends the gear train drive heads; and
said first shifter includes at least one pin (184) that extends through the outer coupler at least one slot for selectively engaging one of the drive heads and transferring the rotational movement of the engaged drive head to said outer coupler.

17. The surgical tool of Claims 15 or 16, wherein said first shifter is a ring that surrounds said outer coupler.

18. The surgical tool of Claims 15, 16 or 17, further including a shift actuator (202) moveably mounted to the housing, said shift actuator being connected to said first shifter (180) for selectively displacing said first shifter over said outer coupler (124) .

19. The surgical tool of Claim 18, wherein said shift actuator is rotatably mounted to said housing.

20. The surgical tool of Claims 15, 16, 17, 18 or 19, wherein the spindle (42) includes a bore, the bore having a distal section (120) that is open for receiving the cutting section and a proximal section (104) that is defined by at least one face surface (105) that transmits torque to the cutting accessory.

21. The surgical tool of Claims 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, or 20, further including a coupling assembly disposed in the housing for releaseably holding the cutting accessory to the spindle.
