(EN)A plurality of flat coils (L41-L46) are laid in layers and the flat coils thus laid are connected in series to constitute one coil pole (L4) which is then excited with an AC signal. When a magnetic response member arranged opposite to the coil pole without touching it is displaced relative to the coil pole, response of the magnetic response member to the coil pole is varied depending on variation in the relative position. Consequently, impedance of the coil pole is varied and a position detection signal is obtained based on an output signal depending on impedance variation which signal is taken out from the coil pole.
