(EN)An optical system, such as a microscope or spectroscope, for stimulating a sample and collecting fluoresced light emitted from that sample. The system has a focusing element for focusing light onto the sample, and a collector for collecting light emitted from the sample and directing it towards a detector. To reduce the effects of background fluorescence, the focusing element is a diffractive optical element.
