In a method and system for deriving a seed position of a subscriber station in a wireless communications system in supporting unassisted GPS-type position determination is provided, the subscriber station receives overhead messages from the wireless communications system, and derives the seed position from the parameter values. The subscriber station may use a data structure in its memory and map possible parameter values to corresponding positions that may serve as the seed positions. The data structure may be updated in response to an update condition.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un système permettant de calculer une position de départ d'un poste d'abonné dans un système de communication sans fil, pour contribuer à la détermination de la position de type GPS non assistée. Selon l'invention, le poste d'abonné reçoit des messages de surcharge émanant du système de communication sans fil et calcule la position de départ, sur la base des valeurs de paramètres. Le poste d'abonné peut utiliser une structure de données dans sa mémoire et établir une correspondance entre les valeurs de paramètres potentielles et les positions correspondantes, aptes à servir de positions de départ. La structure de données peut être actualisée, en réponse à un état d'actualisation.
