An airbag restrain system is disclosed for use in automotive protective systems. The airbag restraint system includes an inflatable airbag cushion having a tether coupled to the interior surface of the cushion. The airbag restraint system further includes first and second inflators for dual mode airbag cushion deployment. Upon a pre-impact condition, the first inflator deploys to partially inflate the cushion and release the tether. The second inflator also deploys to inflate the cushion to approximately full capacity. Upon an impact condition, only the second inflator deploys and the tether extends until taut to limit expansion of the cushion. Means are provided to retain and release the tether in response to the first inflator.

L'invention concerne un système de retenue à coussin de sécurité gonflable destiné aux systèmes de protection automobiles. Ce système de retenue à coussin gonflable comprend un coussin de sécurité gonflable comprenant un élément d'attache couplé à la surface intérieure du coussin. Ce système de retenue à coussin gonflable comprend en outre un premier et un second dispositif de gonflage pour les deux modes de déploiement du coussin gonflable. Dans une situation de pré-collision, le premier dispositif de gonflage est activé et provoque le gonflage partiel du coussin et la libération de l'élément d'attache. Le second dispositif de gonflage est également activé et gonfle le coussin approximativement jusqu'à sa capacité maximale. Dans une situation de collision, seul le second dispositif de gonflage est activé et l'élément d'attache se tend afin de limiter l'expansion du coussin. Ce système comprend en outre des moyens permettant de retenir et de libérer l'élément d'attache en réponse au premier dispositif de gonflage.
