An engine (10, 100) utilizes 'regular EGR cooling' when operating in HCCI mode within a low load range and 'enhanced EGR cooling' that allows the engine to continue to operate in HCCI mode when engine load increases beyond the low load range. When engine load increases to a high load range, the combustion mode changes over to conventional diesel combustion, and exhaust gas recirculation reverts to 'regular EGR cooling'. In a first embodiment, cooling is provided by two heat exchangers, one being a regular EGR cooler (38) always used when cooling is needed and the other, an enhancing EGR cooler (40) that is selectively used. In a second embodiment, cooling is also provided by two heat exchangers, one being an EGR cooler (82) through which liquid coolant always flows when cooling is needed, and the other being a radiator (88) used selectively to cool the liquid coolant before it enters the EGR cooler.

L'invention porte sur un moteur (10, 100) qui utilise un système de 'refroidissement régulier à recirculation des gaz d'échappement', en mode de combustion par compression-allumage à charge homogène (CACH), dans une plage de charges faibles, et un système de 'refroidissement amélioré à recirculation des gaz d'échappement' qui permet au moteur de continuer de fonctionner en mode CACH lorsque la charge du moteur augmente et dépasse la plage de charges faibles. Lorsque la charge du moteur passe à une plage de charges élevées, le mode de combustion passe en mode de combustion diesel traditionnel, et la recirculation des gaz d'échappement revient à un système de 'refroidissement régulier à recirculation des gaz d'échappement' (RGE). Selon un premier mode de mise en oeuvre, le refroidissement s'effectue au moyen de deux échangeurs thermiques, l'un étant un refroidisseur régulier RGE (38) toujours utilisé lorsque le refroidissement est nécessaire, et l'autre, un refroidisseur amélioré RGE (40) qui est utilisé de manière sélective. Selon un second mode de mise en oeuvre, le refroidissement s'effectue également au moyen de deux échangeurs thermiques, l'un étant un refroidisseur RGE (82) dans lequel le liquide de refroidissement coule toujours lorsque le refroidissement est nécessaire, et l'autre étant à un radiateur (88) utilisé de manière sélective pour refroidir le liquide de refroidissement avant sa pénétration dans le refroidisseur RGE.
