CLAIMS:

1. Disk drive unit for a disk (9) to be used in a device for reading and/or writing data on the disk, which disk drive unit comprises a pickup unit (15) mounted to a sledge (19) of a sledge mechanism (17), which sledge mechanism is adapted to move the pickup unit along the disk in substantially radial direction, the sledge mechanism further comprising at least a guide (21), a drive shaft (37) extending parallel thereto, and a follower (35) connected to the sledge and engaged with the drive shaft by a transmission (38) in order to transmit a rotation of the drive shaft into a translation of the sledge, the follower being also in engagement with the guide, and the sledge being connected to the follower.

2. Disk drive unit according to claim 1, wherein the sledge (19) and follower (35) being connected to each other by a screwless connection.

3. Disk drive unit according to claim 2, wherein the sledge (19) and follower (35) are connected to each other through an interlocking connection (41, 43, 47, 49).

Disk drive unit according to claim 3, wherein the sledge (19) has at least two holes (43) the axis of which extends parallel to the guide (21), the follower (35) having two connecting bushes (41) fitting into the holes so as to interlock the follower and the sledge in directions perpendicular to the guide.

Disk drive unit according to claim 4, wherein the connecting bushes (41) of the follower (35) can be fitted into the holes (43) of the sledge (19) by a relative translation of the sledge in the direction of the connecting bushes, the interlocking connection (47, 49) between the follower and the sledge to prevent movement in a direction parallel to the guide being active in the operative position of the sledge and follower.

6. Disk drive unit according to claim 1, wherein the interlocking connection (47, 49) between the follower (35) and sledge (19) comprises a co-operating hook (47) and shoulder (49), interlocking the sledge and follower in their operative position.

Disk drive unit according to claim 4, wherein the follower (35) engages round the guide (21) by means of guide bushes (39), the axis of the connecting bushes (41) of the follower being aligned with the axis of the guide bushes (39), the connecting bushes also engaging around the guide, but having an inner diameter that is slightly larger than that of the guide bushes.

8. Disk drive unit according to claim 1, the guide (21) comprises at least one and preferably two guide shafts (39, 41) extending parallel and at a distance from each other.

9. Disk drive unit according to claim 9, wherein the pickup unit (15) is positioned between the guide shafts (39, 41) and the drive shaft (37) extends alongside one (39) of the guide shafts.

10. Disk drive unit according to claim 1, wherein the follower (35) is made from a polymer material, in particular a thermoplastic material, preferably a poly-oxymethylene.

11. Disk drive unit according to claim 1 , wherein the drive shaft (37) is a screw shaft, the follower (35) comprising at least one tooth (38) engaging with the screw shaft, said tooth preferably engages only a part of the circumference of the screw shaft.

12. Disk drive unit according to claim 11, wherein the at least one tooth (38) is substantially straight and is formed on a substantially flat surface of the follower (35).

13. Device for reading and/or writing data on the disk, comprising the disk drive unit according to one of the preceding claims.
