Abstract

An 802.11 wireless network is disclosed which operates as an asymmetric two-hop cellular network. Relaying from one wireless node (18) via another wireless node (14) to an access point is enabled. The relays are limited so that a maximum of two-hops are used in uplink communications between the nodes (14, 16, 18, 19) and the access point (12). Each node requiring a relay service advertises this to nodes close to it, other nodes respond if prepared to offer a relay service. The access point (12) receives those responses which are useful and selects a relay node (14) on the basis of data it holds about its links to the wireless devices (14, 16, 18, 19) in the network.

L'invention concerne un réseau sans fil 802.11 fonctionnant comme un réseau cellulaire à deux sauts asymétriques. Le relais d'un noeud sans fil (18) par un autre noeud sans fil (14) jusqu'à un point d'accès est activé. Les relais sont limités de sorte qu'un maximum de deux sauts sont utilisés dans des communications de liaison ascendante entre les noeuds (14, 16, 18, 19) et le point d'accès (12). Chaque noeud nécessitant un service de relais informe les noeuds qui sont à sa proximité de cette demande, d'autres noeuds répondent si ils sont préparés à offrir un service de relais. Le point d'accès (12) reçoit les réponses qui sont utiles et sélectionne un noeud de relais (14) sur la base de données qu'il possède sur ces liens allant jusqu'aux dispositifs sans fil (14, 16, 18, 19) du réseau.
