A drive device having both the advantage of effect of improvement in fuel consumption efficiency of a transmission device in which a transmission ratio is electrically changed and the advantage of high transmission efficiency of a gear-type transmission device that transmits power mechanically. This is achieved by providing the drive device with an engagement device (switching clutch C0 or switching brake B0) by which a transmission mechanism (10) is switched between a stepless transmission state and a stepped transmission state. Further, in the transmission mechanism (10), at the time of the start of an engine, a switching control means (50) maintains a differential section (11) at the stepless transmission state or set the differential section (11) preferentially to the stepless transmission state. This causes an engine speed NE to be increased to a level that is equal to or higher than a predetermined engine speed NE’, enabling the engine speed to quickly pass a predetermined engine speed region NER to suppress generation of vibratoty noise of a vehicle in starting the engine.
