Abstract:
(EN) The subject invention provides novel plants that are not only resistant to 2,4-D and other phenoxy auxin herbicides, but also to aryloxyphenoxypropionate herbicides. Heretofore, there was no expectation or suggestion that a plant with both of these advantageous properties could be produced by the introduction of a single gene. The subject invention also includes plants that produce one or more enzymes of the subject invention alone or 'stacked' together with another herbicide resistance gene, preferably a glyphosate. resistance gene, so as to provide broader and more robust weed control, increased treatment flexibility, and improved herbicide resistance management options. More specifically, preferred enzymes and genes for use according to the subject invention are referred to herein as AAD (aryloxyalkanoate dioxygenase) genes and proteins. No &agr;-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase enzyme has previously been reported to have the ability to degrade herbicides of different chemical classes and modes of action. This highly novel discovery is the basis of significant herbicide tolerant crop trait opportunities as well as development of selectable marker technology. The subject invention also includes related methods of controlling weeds. The subject invention enables novel combinations of herbicides to be used in new ways. Furthermore, the subject invention provides novel methods of preventing the formation of, and controlling, weeds that are resistant (or naturally more tolerant) to one or more herbicides such as glyphosate.
(FR) La présente invention a trait à de nouvelles plantes qui sont non seulement résistantes au 2,4-D et autres herbicides à base d'auxine phénoxy, mais également aux herbicides à base d'aryloxyphénoxypropionate. Jusqu'à présent il n'y avait aucune attente ou suggestion qu'une plante présentant ces deux propriétés avantageuses pouvaient être produites par l'introduction d'un gène unique. L'invention a également trait à des plantes produisant une ou des enzymes de l'invention seules ou 'empilées' en assemblage avec un autre gène de résistance aux herbicides, de préférence un gène de résistance au glyphosate, en vue d'assurer un désherbage plus vaste et plus robuste, une flexibilité de traitement accrue, et des options de contrôle de résistance aux herbicides améliorées. De manière plus spécifique, des enzymes et des gènes préférés pour une utilisation selon l'invention sont désignés ici gènes et protéines AAD (aryloxyalcanoate dioxygénase). On n'a pas précédemment fait état de l'enzyme dioxygénase dépendante de $g(a)-cétoglutarate comme présentant la capacité de dégradation d'herbicides de catégories chimiques et de modes d'action différents. Cette grande nouveauté représente la base de possibilités significatives de caractéristiques de cultures tolérantes aux herbicides ainsi que le développement de technologie de marqueurs aptes à la sélection. La présente invention a trait en outre à des procédés associés pour le désherbage. L'invention permet également l'utilisation de nouvelles combinaisons d'herbicides dans de nouvelles méthodes. Enfin, la présente invention a trait à de nouveaux procédés de prévention de la formation, et du contrôle, de mauvaises herbes qui sont résistantes (ou naturellement plus tolérantes) à un ou des herbicides tels que le glyphosate.
