Abstract

An ultrasound probe includes a transducer which is pivotally mounted inside a fluid chamber for scanning a region outside the probe as the transducer is oscillated. A volume compensation balloon is attached to the fluid chamber and is partially filled with acoustic fluid at nominal (room) temperatures. The balloon is made of a high performance thermoplastic which enables the balloon to have a very thin wall. The thin wall is highly compliant as the volume of the fluid inside the balloon changes, and remains so at low temperatures of transport and use. The thin wall exhibits a low permeability to the acoustic fluid. The balloon is formed of a non elastic material and exhibits good thermal stability and high burst strength.

Sonde ultrasonique comprenant un transducteur monté pivotant à l'intérieur d'une chambre de fluide qui., en oscillant, balaye une zone située hors de ladite sonde. Un ballonnet de compensation de volume est fixé à la chambre à fluide et est partiellement rempli d'un fluide acoustique à la température nominale (ambiante). Le ballonnet est fait d'une substance thermoplastique hautes performances qui autorise une très mince épaisseur de sa paroi. Cette mince paroi réagit avec une grande élasticité au changement de volume du fluide à l'intérieur du ballonnet. De plus, ladite paroi présente une très faible perméabilité au liquide acoustique. Le ballonnet, qui est fait d'un matériau non élastique, possède une bonne stabilité thermique et une résistance élevée à l'éclatement.
