Abstract:
(EN) The present invention relates to a process for making a lower molecular weight polymer from a solid stated higher molecular weight feed stock chip. In particular, the molecular weight of an industrial resin or a bottle resin is reduced in a controlled manner by the introduction of ethylene glycol. If the industrial resin is to be employed for industrial fibers, the ethylene glycol may be added at the extruder for spinning the industrial fiber. On the other hand, should the high molecular weigh chip be used for bottle resin, the molecular weight may be reduced by the introduction of ethylene glycol at the extruder for injection molding of preforms of a lower molecular weight. The ethylene glycol/polymer ratio is determined by the reduction in molecular weight that is required. The preferred resin is polyester polymer or copolymer, and especially polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The present invention comprises a process for reducing the molecular weight of a solid stated polyester feed stock resin comprising obtaining polyester resin having an IV greater than about 0.8 dl/g; and mixing ethylene glycol with said polyester wherein said ethylene glycol is present in a stoichiometric amount to reduce the IV to the required level.
(FR) La présente invention concerne un procédé destiné à fabriquer un polymère de faible poids moléculaire à partir d'un granulé de départ de poids moléculaire élevé à l'état solide. Plus particulièrement, on réduit le poids moléculaire d'une résine industrielle ou d'une résine pour bouteilles de manière régulée par introduction d'éthylène glycol. Si la résine industrielle doit être utilisée pour des fibres industrielles, l'éthylène glycol peut être ajouté au niveau de l'extrudeuse en vue du filage de la fibre industrielle. En revanche, si le granulé de poids moléculaire élevé doit être utilisé pour une résine pour bouteilles, le poids moléculaire peut être réduit par introduction d'éthylène glycol au niveau de l'extrudeuse en vue d'un moulage par injection de préformes de faible poids moléculaire. Le rapport éthylène glycol/polymère est déterminé par réduction du poids moléculaire requis. La résine préférée est un polymère ou un copolymère de polyester, et notamment du polyéthylène téréphtalate (PET). La présente invention concerne un procédé destiné à réduire le poids moléculaire d'une résine de départ de polyester à l'état solide et consistant à obtenir une résine de polyester présentant une viscosité intrinsèque supérieure à environ 0,8 dl/g, puis à mélanger l'éthylène glycol avec ce polyester, ledit éthylène glycol étant présent en quantité stoechiométrique de sorte à réduire la viscosité intrinsèque au niveau requis.
