A method and apparatus for rapidly heating a mold cavity to a predetermined temperature preferably above the softening or melting temperature of the molding material prior to and during the molding stage thereby increasing moldability and improving quality of molded parts. The mold cavity is formed by two metallic halves (27, 28) on which high-frequency electric current (24, 25) is applied and an electric circuit involving the two halves is formed. Due to the proximity effect, the electrical current flows on the inner surfaces of the two cavity halves (27, 28), thus rapidly heating the mold cavity. Proper use of insulation (31, 32) behind the cavity surface helps increase heating efficiency. Conformal on-off cooling channels (33) provide both thermal insulation during the heating phase and rapidly cooling of the molded article during the cooling phase.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de chauffer rapidement la cavité d'un moule à une température prédéterminée, supérieure, de préférence, à la température de ramollissement ou de fusion du matériau de moulage avant, et durant la phase de moulage, de manière à accroître la moulabilité et à améliorer la qualité des pièces moulées. La cavité du moule comprend deux moitiés métalliques sur lesquelles on applique un courant électrique haute fréquence ; un circuit électrique impliquant les deux moitiés est formé. En raison de l'effet de proximité, le courant électrique circule sur les surfaces intérieures des deux moitiés de cavité, chauffant ainsi rapidement la cavité du moule. L'utilisation correcte de l'isolation derrière la surface de la cavité contribue à accroître le rendement du chauffage. Des canaux de refroidissement, tout ou rien, conformes, permettent d'obtenir, à la fois, l'isolation thermique durant la phase de chauffage et le refroidissement rapide de l'article moulé durant la phase de refroidissement.
