The present invention provides a process plant for the production of molten steel from primary and/or secondary ferrous materials in which no free oxygen is permitted to contact directly carbon-containing iron melts, comprising: - i) at least three pairs of furnaces (1,2; 3,4;5,6), each furnace of a pair having a hearth base (36) and being interconnected so as to form a continuous flowpath loop for molten metal, the first pair (1,2) defining an iron making loop (A) and the second and third pair (3,4;5,6) defining primary and secondary steel refining loops (B,C) respectively, (ii) means (8) for transferring molten metal from the ironmaking loop (A) to the first refining loop (B) and from the first refining loop (B) to the second refining loop (C), (iii) means for controllably supplying heat to, and removing heat from metal in the furnaces (1,2,3,4,5,6), whereby, in use a central region of metal (19a) in the furnace (1,2,3,4,5,6) becomes or is maintained in its molten state and a peripheral region of the metal (20) is maintained in a solid state such that the molten metal (19a) is contained within a stable solid shell of metal (20), said solid metal shell (20) defining the walls of the furnace (1,2,3,4,5,6), (iv) for each furnace (1,2,3,4,5,6), a removable lid (23), an enclosed space (25) being defined between the hearth (36), the lid (23) and the solid metal shell (20) defining the walls of the furnace (1,2,3,4,5,6), (v) a lifting arrangement (34,35) for controllably raising out of and lowering into the melt any plant items, so that upon shut down, said items can be removed prior to solidification of the molten metal (19a).

La présente invention concerne une installation de traitement pour produire de l'acier en fusion à partir de matériaux ferreux primaires et/ou secondaires, aucun oxygène libre ne pouvant entrer en contact directement avec des bains de fusion de fer contenant du carbone, l'installation comprenant: i) au moins trois paires de fours (1,2; 3,4;5,6), chaque four d'une paire ayant une base de sole (36) et étant interconnecté pour former une boucle à trajectoire continue pour le métal en fusion, la première paire (1,2) définissant une boucle de production de fer (A) et la deuxième et la troisième paire (3,4;5,6) définissant respectivement des boucles d'affinage d'acier primaire et secondaire (B,C); (ii) des moyens (8) pour transférer le métal en fusion de la boucle de production de fer (A) à la première boucle d'affinage (B) et de la première boucle d'affinage (B) à la seconde boucle d'affinage (C); (iii) des moyens pour apporter, de façon régulée, de la chaleur au métal qui se trouve dans les fours (1,2,3,4,5,6), et extraire de la chaleur dudit métal, une zone centrale du métal (19a) dans le four (1,2,3,4,5,6) prenant, au cours de l'utilisation, un état de fusion ou étant maintenue dans cet état, et une zone périphérique du métal (20) étant maintenue dans un état solide de sorte que le métal en fusion (19a) est contenu dans une coque de métal solide et stable (20), ladite coque de métal solide (20) définissant les parois du four (1,2,3,4,5,6); (iv) pour chaque four (1,2,3,4,5,6), un couvercle amovible (23), un espace fermé (25) défini entre la sole (36), le couvercle (23) et la coque de métal solide (20) qui définit les parois du four (1,2,3,4,5,6); (v) un système d'élévation (34,35) qui permet à tout élément de l'installation d'être élevé et retiré du bain de fusion ou abaissé et introduit dans celui-ci, de sorte qu'à l'arrêt de l'installation, lesdits éléments peuvent être retirés avant solidification du métal en fusion (19a).
