Abstract
(EN) A database (20) indexing method and apparatus which includes an index (30) structure for indexing a plurality of objects that are logically divided into fine slices of 8,000 records (22) each, and the fine slices are grouped into coarse slices of 4,000 fine slices each. The indexes include fine and coarse keys, each of which corresponds to a particular data value and a particular fine or coarse slice. Bit vectors are used to determine which of the fine slices or objects identified by the fine slices have particular attributes, and these bit vectors can be stored in compressed format. The index structure can be used to index data where no data records exist. A word indexing technique for crossing page boundaries within a document is also disclosed, as well as a technique for enumerating and displaying virtual folders and their contents.
(FR) L'invention concerne un appareil et un procédé d'indexation de bases de données. Ledit appareil comprend une structure d'indexation permettant d'indexer une pluralité d'objets divisés logiquement en fines tranches de 8 000 fiches chacune, et les fines tranches sont groupées en tranches grossières de 4 000 tranches fines chacune. Les indexes comprennent des clés fines et grossières, chacune desquelles correspondant à une valeur particulière de données et à une tranche fine ou grossière particulière. Des vecteurs de bits sont utilisés pour déterminer quelle tranche fine ou quels objets identifiés par les tranches fines a/ont des attributs particuliers, et ces vecteurs de bits peuvent être stockés en un format comprimé. La structure d'indexation peut être utilisée pour indexer des données là où il n'y a pas de fiches de données existantes.
