A method to increase the resolution of a video signal an non-CRT display consists of decreasing the frame rate to a range below 60Hz and greater than 0Hz and preferably in a range between 10 and 50Hz, thereby increasing the time between successive VSYNC pulses. In the preferred embodiment, the pixel clock rate is maintained the same and an increased number of pixel signals are then displayed between successive VSYNC pulses The natural or inherent persistence capability of the non-CRT display permits the VSYNC signal to be decreased below 60Hz without noticeable flicker. The non-CRT display include TFT/LCD; plasma display, FED display, OLED display, or an LCD on silicon-type display.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant d'augmenter la résolution d'un signal vidéo sur un écran vidéo non cathodique. Ce procédé consiste à réduire le taux de trame à une valeur inférieure à 60Hz et supérieure à 0Hz et, de préférence, une valeur comprise entre 10 et 50Hz, ce qui permet d'augmenter le temps entre les impulsions de synchronisation verticale successives. Dans un mode de réalisation recommandé, la fréquence d'horloge des pixels est maintenue et un nombre supérieur de signaux de pixels sont alors diffusés entre les impulsions de synchronisation verticale successives. La capacité de persistance naturelle ou inhérente de l'écran non cathodique permet la réduction du signal de synchronisation verticale en dessous de 60Hz sans papillotement notable. L'écran non cathodique comprend un écran à matrice active, un écran à plasma, un écran à émission de champs, un écran à diodes électroluminescentes organiques, ou un écran de type cristaux liquides sur silicium.
