Abstract

A polarization separating/synthesizing element capable of being restricted in ray direction deviation (angle error), reduced in beam coupling loss and improved in extinction ratio. An optical device (optical circulator and optical switch) capable of being reduced in size and loss and produced easily and inexpensively. A polarization separating/synthesizing element (10) having polarization separating/synthesizing films (14) respectively formed on opposite parallel planes of a transparent body (12) having mutually-parallel planes with the both polarization separating/synthesizing films facing air. This polarization separating/synthesizing element is used to constitute various types of optical devices (optical circulator and optical switch), and especially is effective in realizing the low cross talk characteristics of a matrix optical switch.

L'invention concerne un élément séparateur/synthétiseur de polarisation dont on peut limiter l'écart de direction de rayons (erreur angulaire), réduire la perte de couplage de faisceau et améliorer le taux d'extinction. Elle concerne également un dispositif optique (circulateur et commutateur optiques) dont on peut réduire la taille et les pertes et que l'on peut produire facilement et de manière peu coûteuse. Elle concerne en outre un élément séparateur/synthétiseur de polarisation (10) pourvu de films séparateurs/synthétiseurs de polarisation (14) formés respectivement sur les plans parallèles opposés d'un corps transparent (12) présentant des plans parallèles aux deux films séparateurs/synthétiseurs de polarisation à l'air. Ledit élément séparateur/synthétiseur de polarisation sert à constituer divers types de dispositifs optiques (circulateur et commutateur optiques). Il est notamment efficace au niveau de la réalisation des caractéristiques de diaphonie réduites d'un commutateur optique matriciel.
