A composition comprising a triazine derivative; it further comprises at least one chiral compound, an alcohol and a surfactant. An alignment structure useful in a liquid crystal display device comprising a substrate having disposed thereon an oriented film of a lyotropic nematic liquid crystalline material. Particularly useful lyotropic materials include a class of nematic liquid crystalline compounds known as chromonics. The substrates can be made by coating the lyotropic liquid crystal material onto the substrate to provide an oriented film of the lyotropic material. The alignment structure can also include one or more polarizing dyes or other additives and can thus be made to perform polarizing, retarding and/or color filtering functions in addition to alignment and orientation functions. Liquid crystal displays containing such alignment structures and methods of making such displays are also described.

L'invention concerne une composition comprenant un dérivé de triazine, ainsi qu'au moins un composé chiral, un alcool et un tensioactif. L'invention concerne également une structure d'alignement pouvant être utilisée dans un dispositif d'affichage à cristaux liquides, comprenant un substrat recouvert d'un film orienté de matériau cristallin liquide lyotropique nématique. Parmi les matériaux lyotropiques particulièrement utiles, on trouve une catégorie de composés cristallins liquides nématiques connus sous le nom de chromoniques. Les substrats peuvent être réalisés par revêtement du substrat avec le matériau cristallin liquide lyotropique afin de former un film orienté de matériau lyotropique. La structure d'alignement peut également comprendre un ou plusieurs colorants de polarisation ou d'autres additifs, et peut de ce fait servir à réaliser des fonctions de polarisation, de retard et/ou de filtrage de couleur en plus des fonctions d'alignement et d'orientation. Cette invention concerne également des affichages à cristaux liquides contenant des structures d'alignement de ce type ainsi que des procédés permettant la réalisation de ces affichages.
