(EN)A ball forming process is for forming a ball (32) of metal on a metal wire (26) in a wire bonder (20). The process includes generating a glow discharge (11) between an electrode (4) and an end (5) of the metal wire (26) to form a ball (32) of metal at the end (5) and the wire (26). The ball is formed in a gaseous atmosphere comprising greater than 96 % by volume of nitrogen and substantially no hydrogen.
(FR)L'invention concerne un procédé de formage de bille permettant de former une bille (32) de métal sur un fil métallique (26) dans une ponteuse (20). Le procédé consiste à générer une décharge luminescente (11) entre une électrode (4) et une extrémité (5) d'un fil métallique (26), de manière à former une bille (32) de métal au niveau de l'extrémité (5) du fil (26). La bille est formée en atmosphère gazeuse renfermant plus de 96 % en volume d'azote et sensiblement pas d'hydrogène.
