The invention relates to an AC plasma display panel (12) of the surface discharge type, and more specifically to the structure of the address electrodes (5) of said panel, and to a method of driving said panel. According to the invention, only one address electrode (5) is used for one out of every two columns. Scan (8) and common (7) electrodes may comprise transparent parts (11). These parts (11) may extend over one out every two cells, in a checkerboard fashion. In a preferred embodiment as shown in Fig. 7, the columns may have alternating wide (15) and narrow (16) cells (2). In the driving method according to the invention, all rows are addressed during an addressing phase, and subsequently all rows are simultaneously sustained during a sustain phase.

Ecran à plasma (12) à courant alternatif du type à décharge de surface, et plus spécifiquement structure des électrodes d'adressage (5) dudit écran, ainsi que procédé d'excitation dudit écran. Selon la présente invention, une seule électrode d'adresse (5) est utilisée pour une colonne sur deux. Les électrodes de balayage (8) et communes (7) peuvent comporter des parties transparentes (11). Ces parties (11) peuvent s'étendre sur une cellule sur deux, à la façon d'un damier. Dans un mode de réalisation préféré présenté à la figure 7, les colonnes peuvent posséder des cellules alternativement larges (15) et étroites (16). Dans le procédé d'excitation selon la présente invention, toutes les rangées sont adressées lors d'une phase d'adressage, et ensuite, toutes les rangées sont simultanément entretenues pendant une phase d'entretien.
